22 Veterans Commit Suicide Every Day.
This is tragic, simply unacceptable. Our servicemen and women deserve better, they deserve our best.
Suicides among our veterans is well above that of the general population and should be a matter of great importance to all of us. While veterans constitute only 8.5% of the population they account or 18% of all deaths from suicide in the U.S.. This is an over index of more than 200%!
The least I can do is to give thanks and share a prayer for the brave men and women who have served our country to protect our freedoms. To raise awareness for those 22 veterans who commit suicide every day, I originally set out to do 22 push-ups for 22 days. After posting on Facebook my daily tribute for 22 days, it seemed too little for a cause so important.
You see, both my parents were Marines. My taking a few minutes from my day to share this story is the least I can do. I have no doubt that 9 out of 10 people are either unaware or find it hard to believe.
I remain committed to raising awareness of this tragic plight. I will not stop my daily tribute until I have have completed 22 push-ups in every state and Washington DC.
After 885 consecutive days, I have taken my campaign to our local high schools, major sporting events, fundraisers, supermarkets, to the footsteps of our nation's capital, even on the shoulder of our interstate highways.
Will you join me to raise awareness? I challenge you to 22 push-ups for 22 days. Video your tribute and post on Facebook to share your story with family, friends and co-workers.
